Samia Cultural Revival Program
The Samia Cultural Revival Program is dedicated to restoring and preserving the cultural wisdom of the Samia community. It revives traditional teachings of healing, rituals, gratitude, unity, care, generosity, and living in balance with nature—values that once guided daily life but are now fading.
Through this project, we have so far interviewed 10 elders, produced videos, and developed the Reparations of Wisdom Booklet: Stories from Samia Cultural Revival, alongside illustrations and comics. These efforts document knowledge for future generations and rebuild pride in our cultural identity. The program is guided by a philosophy of learning, unlearning, and relearning—to uncover, recover, and preserve the practices, stories, and wisdom that are at risk of being lost. Without documentation, we risk losing an entire library of ancestral knowledge. Through ongoing work, we aim to expand this repository, interviewing more elders on specific themes to ensure a comprehensive record.
By reconnecting with how our ancestors lived in harmony with nature and with each other, the program strengthens community cohesion and inspires sustainable, culturally rooted development across the Lake Victoria Basin. It demonstrates how traditional knowledge can guide locally grounded, culturally relevant solutions for today’s social and environmental challenges, including water management, regenerative practices, and just ways of life.
Wisdom from Elders
Through a series of interviews, elders from the Samia community share their knowledge of traditional practices, rituals, and ways of living in harmony with nature. Their voices preserve memories, values, and teachings that have guided the community for generations, including indigenous approaches to water management, land care, and environmental stewardship. These stories are used as tools for climate education in locally accessible ways, helping younger generations understand climate change through culture, lived experience, and community wisdom. By documenting and sharing this knowledge, we reconnect youth to their cultural roots while strengthening local climate action and resilience for the future.
Knowledge Products
We have created a growing collection of knowledge products that capture and preserve Samia cultural practices, rituals, and ancestral wisdom. These include the Reparations of Wisdom Booklet, illustrations and comics, wisdom cards, posters, and short video stories drawn from interviews with elders.
Together, these resources form a living archive for future generations, offering culturally grounded insights that support climate action, sustainable livelihoods, equality, water stewardship, and community development. By documenting this knowledge, we ensure that local wisdom continues to guide solutions rooted in culture, place, and people.
